Dove Cresswell – Animal Training in Films

Author: buster  //  Category: Dog Breeds, Dog Care, Dog Food, Dog Product Reviews, Dog Talk

One of the most interesting animal trainers I’ve come across is Dove Cresswell. Why? Because she trains dogs and other animals for films and television. Some of the films she’s worked on include Space Buddies, The X Files: I Want to Believe, Cats and Dogs 2, Saved! and Sam’s Lake. She’s also worked on the TV programs like Romeo, Behind the Camera: Charlie’s Angels, and Cougar Crossings.

She hasn’t just trained dogs but also large reptiles, cougars, rodents, birds, cockroaches and deer. She’s trained all kinds of dog breeds and all sizes. She can train dogs up to Master’s level in the Agility sport. For a twenty-five year old, I think that’s quite impressive.

Her fascination with dog training started with her labrador puppy that she took to obedience classes and then spent hours training him in her back yard to do tricks and to navigate obstacle courses.

She volunteered at the {Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals|SPCA}. By 17 she had a paid staff position at an animal hospital after she had volunteered there from the age of 16.

At university she got a BA in Science-Biology. She started working in films with a docu-drama called Cougar Crossings where she proved her ability with juvenile cougars.

At present she is volunteering with That’ll Do Border Collie Rescue. She has three dogs of her own – a Border Collie, an Australian Shepherd, and a mini Poodle x.

If you’re concerned that animals {are mistreated|don’t enjoy their time} on film sets, Dove makes it quite clear that they do enjoy making films and that there’s lots of playing in between takes! In USA and Canada, all animal trainers working in films and TV are observed by the American Humane Association.

If you want to get your dog into films, your dog has to be very well trained. Dove looks for dogs that compete in Agility or Obedience.

Dove has worked with several of the top dog trainers and selected the most effective methods out of all of them. Using all this knowledge and experience she created her own dog training course. It utilises the exact methods she uses to train animals for their film roles. You can be sure she gets results because film directors aren’t very tolerant of animal trainers that don’t produce the results.

Is Your Dog’s Growling Driving You Crazy?

Author: buster  //  Category: Dog Breeds, Dog Care, Dog Food, Dog Product Reviews, Dog Talk

It’s usual for a puppy or dog to growl when you play tug of war with him. However, it’s also a sign of aggression and can be a sign the dog may bite – so be careful!

You should know if the growling is appropriate or inappropriate. If your puppy or dog is eating or chewing on a favorite toy and growls as you get near, that isn’t permissible behavior. Your dog is being aggressive.

If the growling starts with no obvious reason, it’s time for a visit to the vet to make sure there isn’t a medical problem.

Growling can be a signal that your dog is trying to position himself as the alpha dog or pack leader. So, the next thing you check is that you position yourself as the pack leader in your household. This is the foundation of solving many dog behavior problems.

To position yourself as the alpha dog or pack leader, you should adopt the approach of NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free). This means that before you give your dog anything, he must obey a command. This includes that you must not allow your dog to demand your attention. If you permit him to demand attention, you have just lost your position in the hierarchy. Just ignore him if he tries to demand attention. You should choose when to give him attention. He may try harder but you must not give in or all is lost.

With NILIF everyone in the home needs to be consistent.

So, for example, you should ask your dog to sit quietly before you set his meal down or before you let it out of the house. It doesn’t count if your dog offers a behavior before you give the command.

Walk through the door before your dog when leaving the house. You can let your dog see you eating a small snack like a biscuit before you put down his food since the alpha dog eats first. You are only required to repeat this for two weeks to position  yourself as the pack leader.

Everyone in the family needs to engage in this process to set them higher up in the hierarchy than your puppy or dog.

The leader of the pack makes his bed on higher ground, so do not permit your dog to rest on your bed if you want to be higher in the hierarchy.

You should do regular training sessions with your puppy or dog. Every training session should be short and fun. This will start you on the path to a better behaved dog.
