Dove Cresswell – Animal Training in Films
Author: buster // Category: Dog Breeds, Dog Care, Dog Food, Dog Product Reviews, Dog TalkOne of the most interesting animal trainers I’ve come across is Dove Cresswell. Why? Because she trains dogs and other animals for films and television. Some of the films she’s worked on include Space Buddies, The X Files: I Want to Believe, Cats and Dogs 2, Saved! and Sam’s Lake. She’s also worked on the TV programs like Romeo, Behind the Camera: Charlie’s Angels, and Cougar Crossings.
She hasn’t just trained dogs but also large reptiles, cougars, rodents, birds, cockroaches and deer. She’s trained all kinds of dog breeds and all sizes. She can train dogs up to Master’s level in the Agility sport. For a twenty-five year old, I think that’s quite impressive.
Her fascination with dog training started with her labrador puppy that she took to obedience classes and then spent hours training him in her back yard to do tricks and to navigate obstacle courses.
She volunteered at the {Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals|SPCA}. By 17 she had a paid staff position at an animal hospital after she had volunteered there from the age of 16.
At university she got a BA in Science-Biology. She started working in films with a docu-drama called Cougar Crossings where she proved her ability with juvenile cougars.
At present she is volunteering with That’ll Do Border Collie Rescue. She has three dogs of her own – a Border Collie, an Australian Shepherd, and a mini Poodle x.
If you’re concerned that animals {are mistreated|don’t enjoy their time} on film sets, Dove makes it quite clear that they do enjoy making films and that there’s lots of playing in between takes! In USA and Canada, all animal trainers working in films and TV are observed by the American Humane Association.
If you want to get your dog into films, your dog has to be very well trained. Dove looks for dogs that compete in Agility or Obedience.
Dove has worked with several of the top dog trainers and selected the most effective methods out of all of them. Using all this knowledge and experience she created her own dog training course. It utilises the exact methods she uses to train animals for their film roles. You can be sure she gets results because film directors aren’t very tolerant of animal trainers that don’t produce the results.
