The Wonderful Boxer Dog as a Breed
Author: buster // Category: Dog Breeds, Dog Care, Dog Food, Dog Product Reviews, Dog TalkBoxers were initially bred from the (now extinct) Bullenbeisser and an English Bulldog in Germany. Boxers are stocky, medium-sized, and have short hair. They are generally fawn or brindled with or without white markings.
With white markings on 1/3 or more of their fur, “white boxers” make up over 20% of all boxers. These white Boxer dogs are not albino, but they are more likely to be deaf in one or both ears (about 18% of white Boxers experience deafness).
Boxers can range in size and weight. Males are usually 22-25 inches tall and 65-75 lbs while females are usually 21-23.5 inches tall and 50-60 lbs. A breeder can usually expect to find six to eight puppies per litter. Boxers tend to live from between ten to twelve years.
Boxers’ broad, short skulls and under bite may look fierce, (and certainly, they can be when mistreated), but their bright, playful, and energetic personalities make them a perfect family pet. They are usually very good around children and otherwise well-behaved. Just keep in mind that because Boxers are a very energetic breed, they need adequate exercise to prevent behaviors derived from boredom, (such as digging and chewing).
Here’s a quote from the AKC regarding the true breed standard.
“The character of the Boxer is of the greatest importance and demands the most solicitous attention. He is renowned from olden times for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household. He is harmless in the family, but distrustful of strangers, bright and friendly of temperament at play, but brave and determined when aroused. His intelligence and willing tractability, his modesty and cleanliness make him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty, and is never false or treacherous even in his old age. ”
